By removing impurities, including potential skin-irritating tannins, we deliver the purest witch hazel available.

We harvest our witch hazel where it grows naturally – on 33,000 lush acres of untouched New England forest.
Following the standards set by the U.S. Pharmacopeia (USP) for active naturals, we harvest mature witch hazel plants while dormant during the winter months. These plants have naturally shed their leaves for the season and have been exposed to the elements for years, resulting in bark with the most potent active ingredients. In essence, we capture wild-grown plants at their peak potency in their native habitats, never on cultivated farms. Additionally, our sustainable harvesting practices are annually certified organic and actually promote forest regrowth by selectively removing mature plants, allowing younger witch hazel and other hardwoods to thrive beneath the opened canopy.

Witch Hazel, also known as winterbloom, snapping hazel and spotted alder, is a powerful little plant that contains therapeutic and aromatic components. Native to the Northeast, this witch hazel bears delicate golden flowers and seed capsules in late autumn, after the leaves have fallen.
The seed capsules mature one year later, at which time they burst open and scatter the seeds away to grow new plants. The extracts from the bark and twigs are distilled during the cold New England winters when the botanical is in peak bloom to create the purest, most natural astringent that is Dickinson’s Original witch hazel.
In the early 17th Century, Native Americans recognized the power of witch hazel and used the plant to treat minor wounds, abrasions and skin irritations. Reverend Thomas Newton Dickinson (T.N. Dickinson) understood the healing properties of witch hazel and opened his first distillery in 1866, bottling witch hazel and setting the standard for witch hazel production.
